I’ve been hearing from a lot of you that your trunk show sales are low, attendance is low, or perhaps your trunk show dates are not “sticking” and your hostessing keep cancelling or rescheduling on you. All of these issues can be remedied with solid hostess coaching and consistent follow-up.

Below are several tips from top sellers to help you make the most of your next Stella & Dot trunk show.

1.) As our CEO Jessica Herrin always says, “Hostess coaching starts when you book the trunk show.” When you set the date, don’t stop there! Ask your hostess questions to get to know her and her personal style. This way you can suggest jewelry pieces that she may like, and also you can assess in which areas she’s connected. Perhaps she’s involved with her church or with her son’s soccer team. Or maybe her mom is in a book club. The more you know, the more you can help her have a terrific trunk show.

2.) Use the 4-touch method, as suggested by top seller Alondra Cortez: First, send out a “Save the Date” email to your hostess that she can forward on to her contacts; Second, create an Evite through the Stylist Lounge (either you or your hostess can input the guest list emails); Third, create a paper invite that the hostess can mail to her guests and she can pass out at school, work, etc. (note: please don’t overlook this step, paper invites increase attendance at every trunk show by 2-3 people – which is an additional $200-$300 in sales!); Fourth, follow-up with a text reminder from the iPhone App called “Post” – it’s a great tool for you & your hostess to send out cute text messages the day before the trunk show.

A word on paper invites: Just do it!
* Mail out invites for your hostess + give her 10-20 invites for her to pass out at school, work, gym, etc.
* Consider including a mini Look Book with each invite you mail out.

a.) Postcard Invitations – provided by Stella & Dot as a Business Supply Purchase
Pros: Inexpensive, easy, fast
Cons: Not a lot of room to write trunk show info on the back; no envelope

b.) 5×7 Notecard Invitation – provided by Stella & Dot as a Business Supply Purchase
Pros: Pretty, inexpensive, fast (once you create a template)
Cons: Need to first create a template or download the template from My Business > Logos & Images > Trunk Show Tools

c.) Create your own invitation – Recommended graphic designer: Danielle Imwalle, danielle.imwalle@gmail.com (shown below)
Pros: Custom invite, pretty, no work
Cons: Cost and printing

3.) Send your hostess catalogs & order forms before the trunk show. Encourage her to pass out the catalogs and collect outside orders. Tell her, “Let’s shoot for 10 guests and 3 outside orders.” A top-selling Stylist in Texas even gives each hostess a “loaner jewelry kit” before her trunk show. The Stylist gives the hostess the Medium Jewelry Tote, filled with 10-15 pieces of jewelry, and the hostess is able to wear the jewelry & promote her trunk show the entire week beforehand. It’s a GREAT way to increase attendance, brand awareness and outside orders!

4.) Connect with your hostess at least 2x before her trunk show. You don’t need to ask her about the guest list, but more share your enthusiasm and gratitude for her trunk show! Share with her again, “Let’s try to get 10 guests and 3 outside orders. Let’s brainstorm who else we can invite, in case we forgot some people.”

5.) During the trunk show, really delve into the role of “stylist” and ask lots of style questions. Put together different looks and show guests how to build an essential jewelry wardrobe. And both Michelle Gallagher and Michelle Aspling – who both have very high trunk show orders – say that they “never want a guest to leave with just one jewelry item on their order form.” So, don’t be afraid to suggest jewelry pieces to finish the look when you’re at check out. Try saying, “Sally, I love these pieces that you’re getting. Let me show you a couple pairs of earrings to finish this look.”

Career Rank: Senior Stylist
Start Date:
August 2009
Jump Start Earned:
$1,000

Q & A:
Q: Just two months ago, in August, you had your two year Stella-versary. Congrats! What did Stella & Dot mean to you when you first started? And what does it mean to you now?
A:
I joined Stella & Dot on a whim, after just falling in love with the collection. Over the last two years, my Stella & Dot business has grown to be such a positive aspect in my life that I am very proud of.
Q: Looking back, who were your first six hostesses and how did you approach them? What did you say to them to book their trunk show?
A:  I approached family and friends who I knew would love the jewelry, and told them I would love to bring the collection to them for a fun girls’ night in and get them lots of free pieces as a thank you for hosting from our company.

Q: As a new stylist, what was a challenge for you and how have
you overcome it?
A: Booking trunk shows at trunk shows. I overcame this challenge by attending boot camp trainings and listening to the practical tips shared and just practicing in my conservations with people!

Q: You have been a very consistent Stylist and your trunk show sales average about $1,100 – and lately your average is climbing toward $1,500 per show – any tips on holding a big, successful trunk show
?
A: I always use a 4 touch contact system for every trunk show, 1) a Save the Date email, 2) a printed paper invitation with mini-look book inside, 3) Paperless Post, 4) Text reminder from the iphone app POST.Q: I admire that you balance Stella & Dot with your full-time career so well – you make it look effortless! What are your three tips for fitting Stella & Dot into your schedule?
A: 1) Dedicating a 4 hour block of office hours to work on my Stella & Dot business every Saturday & Sunday afternoon, and 1-2 hours in the evening two nights a week, 2) Creating a weekly Stella & Dot “To-Do” list every Sunday night for the week, 3) Using my lunch break to run over to the post office to mail a hostess package or thank you notes, etc.

Q: If you could give a new stylist only 3 tips, what would they be?

A: 1) Create an on-going list of Potential Hostesses & Stylists, and make it a point to had to it weekly, 2) Do worry about not having enough pieces in your collection starting off to show,
3) Make goals every month to qualify, earn jewelry for your samples for FREE and top your personal best

Q: You have a wonderful, growing team & you will make Star any day now – what is something you struggled with as a leader and how did you overcome it?
A: Keeping in touch with everyone b/c of our busy schedules.  I try to make phone calls and emails every Sunday night to stylist on my team to touch base & check in during my office hours.Q: How do you find time to to coach and train your team while having a full-time job? Any tips?
A: Simply by being available to my team by phone & email for questions/support/etc., and just doing my best to return calls/emails each night before going to bed so that questions are answered within 24 hours.

Q: What’s something that you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you
first started?
A:  That sometimes the people you think will support your S & D business the most, don’t, and others you never thought of will surprise you unexpectedly, so try not to take things personally, instead just take everything in stride, and keep moving forward!

Q: What’s your next goal with Stella & Dot? What’s your one-year goal?

A: Star Stylist and a first line team of 20.

I’m so thrilled to introduce our Stylist of the Month for August — the cute-as-a-button Emily Williams in Baltimore, MD! Emily started just a few months ago, but has really started off strong with consistent trunk shows, earning herself two Jump Starts. She is the perfect example of how a new stylist can ump head first into this lovely business – especially during the “slow” months of summer… But for Emily, it was anything but slow. She rocked Summer 2011 and she is sure to ROCK HER FALL!

Quick Facts:
Name:  Emily Williams
City/State: Baltimore, MD
Career Rank:  Stylist
Start Date:  June 4, 2011
Jump Start Earned: 2 – $1,000 in free jewelry

Q & A:
Q: We are lucky to have a wonderful Stylist like you join our Stella & Dot family! What does Stella & Dot mean to you and to your family?
A:
I am blessed to be able to be a stay at home mom, but who doesn’t love some extra girl time?  I’m able to run a fun, fashion-forward business on my own time, wear fabulous jewelry, and get paid to have parties!

Q: How did you find out about Stella & Dot and become a Stylist?
A:  My very dear friend Krista Demcher, recently promoted to Senior Stylist, introduced me to S&D.  I had been to some of her trunk shows and fell in love with the jewelry.

Q: Looking back, who were your first six hostesses and how did you approach them? What did you say to them to book their trunk show?
A:  Mostly close friends and family.  Some offered to have a party once they too saw the gorgeous jewels, some I suggested they throw a party.  Then a friend of a friend asked to have a party right away and it was my biggest party yet!

Q: As a new stylist, what has been a challenge for you and how have
you overcome it?
A: Being bold and/or confrontational.  I’ve learned that just sharing my excitement about the product is enough to get others interested.

Q: You have been a consistent Stylist, selling an average $2,500 for the last 3 months since you’ve started. Any tips on keeping a consistent trunk show schedule throughout your Jump Start
?
A: Booking parties at parties is key, and remember to plan ahead to keep the business flowing all year long!  I remember being a little disappointed in July when I booked an October party, but now that it’s a month away, I’m really happy I have that one planned!  Incentives or promotions are great for those who need that extra push to have a party too.  One offer I like to do is offer a discontinued or sale jewel for someone who books within the next month.

Q: Any tips for juggling the work/life balance?

A: As a stay-at-home mom, my “job” never ends…but there’s so much flexibility with it too!  I take advantage of nap times, quiet times, and the preschool hours.  AND I have an amazingly supportive husband who makes it all possible.

Q: If you could give a new stylist only 3 tips, what would they be?

A: 1.)While the jewelry sells itself, there’s always that one guest who has a random question, so know the jewels; 2.)  Show your excitement/love of the jewelry and business, it’s contagious; and 3.)  Don’t be afraid to ask somone to have a trunk show, the worst you can hear is a “no.”  But keep it real and personal with your guests.  One way is by remembering what their wish list item was, or when an upcoming wedding/event they have is so they can be prepared with jewels.  They always appreciate that you remembered them.

Q: Do you want to build a team of Stylists in the near future? If so, why and when?
A:  I think it would be great to have a team of stylists to support and encourage one another, but must admit this has been a weakness of mine.  I’ve gone through my list of contacts again, made some personal calls and emails, so hoping to change that very soon!  Hoping for at least one stylist before the end of the month.

Q: What’s something that you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you
first started?
A:  I think what I had a hard time seeing was how I had a strong enough network of people to make the business successful.  My launch party was one of the smallest parties I’ve had but from it, I was able to book 4 parties and from there I’ve been able to build a great network of customers.

Q: What’s your next goal with Stella & Dot? What’s your one-year goal?

A:  I would like to have at least 4 parties a month.  I also look forward to having past hostesses book AGAIN for the winter.  By a year I’d like to have a great network of customers, a consistent schedule of parties, and hopefully a few sponsors.Q: Let’s say that it’s New Years Eve and you are looking back on the past year of your Stella & Dot business. What does it look like? What would you have liked to accomplish?
A:  I would like to have had 20 parties by New Year’s Eve and have sponsored one or two new stylists.

Now… For the Fun Stuff!
Q: If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be and why?
A:  Mint chocolate chip. It’s delicious no matter what time of year it is.

Q: Cookie or brownie? Cake or pie?

A:  Brownies, the gooier the better!  Pie.

Q: Favorite place you’ve ever visited and why?

A:  Italy… the history, the culture, the food, the wine, the college experience in another country…I could go on and on

Q: Finish this sentence: When I was a little girl, I dreamed of….

A:  being married and having children, and being an interior designer.

Q: If you were a Stella & Dot piece of jewelry, what would you be and why?
A:  The Bamboleo – it was a goal of mine to earn it for free, I was obsessed with it from the minute I saw it.  The colors in my house are the colors in that piece, I love everything about it.

Q: What are your favorite jewelry pieces to layer? (Necklaces, bracelet combos, stackable rings, etc.)
A: Bracelets – esp. the paige and sloane bangles.

Please join me in congratulating our Stylist of the Month for July – Krista Demcher from Bel Air, MD! She is a wonderful Stylist who consistently sells and sponsors, averaging sales of $2,310 each month. Krista is about to promote to Senior Stylist, and I’m sure she will reach Star Stylist by the end of the year! She is an excellent example of how consistency can positively affect your business. We are so proud of you Krista, keep it up!

Quick Facts:
Name:  Krista Demcher
City/State: Bel Air, MD
Career Rank:  Stylist – hoping to hit Senior this month!
Start Date:  May 2010
Jump Start Earned:  $2000 – $1000 from my own sales and $1000 from the two stylists I signed up that also hit their Jump Start!
Q & A:
Q: You’ve been a Stylist for over a year now. What did Stella & Dot mean to you when you first started? And what does it mean to you now?
A:  I started with Stella & Dot simply because I loved the jewelry and I was looking for a fun way to contribute to my family’s financial security.  I researched the company thoroughly before beginning and knew that Stella & Dot was on to something BIG!  Having always been cautious with any new venture, this started off no differently – I was afraid of being that pushy sales lady that we all try to avoid!  My first few months in business I stayed within my circle of family and friends, but going to Danielle Redner’s Bootcamp really transformed everything for me.  I came away with a new outlook and the determination that in order for this to perform like a business, I had to treat it as one – and that’s what I’ve been doing!
Q: Looking back, who were your first six hostesses and how did you approach them?
A:  My first six Hostesses were all friends and family – four in my current state of Maryland, and two in my home state of Pennsylvania.
Q: Looking back, what did you find challenging as a new stylist and how did you overcome it?
A:  My biggest challenge was definitely finding the confidence to book outside of friends and family.  I didn’t want to put anyone on the spot or make them feel pressured, because I hate feeling that way myself!  At Bootcamp I heard such a great analogy – if the manager of your favorite store (in my case, Anthropologie) told you that they would close down the place for you and your friends to shop and then you would earn a portion of the sales for free, would you say no?  Obviously not!  When I began reminding myself that we have something of great value to offer, my confidence had a major boost and I became much less timid when trying to book!
Q: You have been a consistent Stylist, always qualifiying each month – with average monthly sales $2,310. Any tips on how to stay consistent with trunk shows all year long?
A: Set yourself up for success by looking ahead and overbooking your month by at least one trunk show.  I always assume that at least one show will cancel or be particularly small, so I try to add at least one extra to make up for it in advance.  Worst case scenario is that all go off without a hitch – then I have a really great month!  I also stay in close contact with my hostesses before and after their trunk show – before to get them excited and encourage them to expand their guest list, and after to collect outside orders.  Most are really grateful for the extra touch of customer service!
Q: Any tips for juggling the work/life balance?
A: I’m still working on this!  I’m so lucky to have an extremely supportive and helpful husband who is happy to take over with our two girls while I do my trunk shows in the evening.  I try to accomplish some of my work during naptime and my girls are used to making trips to mail Look Books – we are regulars in Postman Plus!  I’m Mommy first so I try to keep my business separate from my personal life, but of course there is some overlap.  Sometimes it works in my advantage though – my daughters often ask complete strangers if their jewelry is Stella & Dot which opens the door right up for me!
Q: If you could give a new stylist only 3 tips, what would they be?
A: 1.  Stay positive and show your excitement – it’s contagious to others!  2.  Do something to move your business forward each day – even if it’s just sending one email to follow up with a customer.  3.  Spend your time on what matters – booking trunk shows and recruiting stylists!  No need to use up your hours on designing fliers or invitations – Stella & Dot has done all of that for us already!
Q: You were the second highest in sales in July for the entire team – How did you ensure a strong trunk show schedule during the summer months?
A: I started to look at my summer schedule back in April and kept my focus on booking during those months.  I revamped my Who Do You Know List to make it even bigger than it already was and began prospecting with those people.  I also overbooked the month knowing that I’d probably have a cancellation or two – which I did!
Q: Now that you’re almost a Senior Stylist and soon-to-be Star, what do you find challenging now and how do you plan to overcome it?
A:  Balancing my personal sales, coaching my team and recruiting new stylists is proving to be more challenging than I thought!  I’m hoping to hire a sitter for at least one morning a week this Fall so I can have a few uninterrupted hours to focus just on my business and make some phone calls without little voices in the background!
Q: What’s something that you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you first started?
A:  Don’t be shy – people want to hear what you have to say and why you love Stella & Dot.  Guests come to your trunk shows expecting to get styling advice and to learn about the brand, so don’t be afraid to share what you know.  It’s not pushy – it’s personal service!
Q: What’s your next goal with Stella & Dot? What’s your one-year goal?
A:  I’d love to hit Star by the end of the year, and then stay a consistent Star throughout 2012.  While Director is a long-term goal of mine, right now I think that Star would definitely be the sweet spot for me!
Now… For the Fun Stuff!
Q: If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be and why?
A:  Chocolate Peanut Butter.  I am convinced that God meant for those two flavors to go together!
Q: Cookie or brownie? Cake or pie?
A:  Definitely cake!  Yellow cake with the icky, over-the-top sweet icing.  It’s the highlight of my birthday each year!
Q: Favorite place you’ve ever visited and why?
A:  Rome.  I spent ten days there in college and fell in love…the history, the people, the pizza – loved absolutely everything about it!
Q: Finish this sentence: When I was a little girl, I dreamed of….
A:  Being a teacher, a mommy and a Rockette.  Guess two of three ain’t bad!
Q: If you were a Stella & Dot piece of jewelry, what would you be and why?
A:  The Turquoise Sea Necklace – bold yet classic, multi-layered and brightens up any outfit!  Also happens to be the piece of Stella & Dot that I first fell in love with and prompted me to become a stylist!

Here is the most effective way to post an event or meeting on Eventbrite:

10.) Be sure to advertise the event thorugh your Facebook and Twitter account to spread the buzz!
11.) You can also add a “Category” for your event and input “Keywords” (such as “stella & dot,” “jewelry,” “direct sales,” “consultant,” etc.) for your event.
12.) If you are charging a fee for Stylists or guests to attend your event, please note that Eventbrite does charge a fee to accept payment. You can either… Take responsibility for this fee and absorb it yourself as the leader, -or- Tack on the fee to the Stylist’s payment (so, for example, if you are charging $10 for the monthly meeting, the Stylist would essentially pay the $10 plus the $1.50+ charge to Eventbrite for a total charge of $11.50).

#3 – Craigslist
This is another great, FREE, searchable even listing that you can use for your event and meetings.

1.) Go to www.craigslist.com
2.) Under the Community section, click on “events”
3.) Click on “Post” on the very top right corner
4.) Type in the event details and info. You can copy/paste the exact eent details from your Eventbrite posting.
5.) If you’d like, you can add in a few more keywords or sentences to increase your chances that someone will find the event from Google or Bing.
6.) Include your website and phone number, but don’t give out your email address, in an effort to decrease email spam.

My top three tips for holding a “Meet Stella & Dot” event, otherwise known as an MSD.

1.) Location
* Choose a location that’s fun, hip and oh-so-Stella & Dot – usually a wine bar, bistro or coffee shop that is close to freeway access.
* Ask around to find out what people are saying about the venue, or go on Yelp and Google Reviews to read what others are saying.
* To keep costs down, don’t worry about agreeing to a room fee or a food minimum – Partner with another venue if that’s the case.

2.) Inviting People to Attend – the most important part!
* First go to hostesses & customers (they already love S&D) to spread the buzz and ask them to join you at your event
* Contact friends & family to see if they’d like to join you also – And have them share & forward the event details to anyone they think is interested.
* Partner with the manager or owner of the venue and ask them to post flyers or share flyers within the venue location.
* Bonus Tip: Utilize Facebook, Twitter, Craigslist, Eventbrite and other online resources to help you spread the buzz! Just be sure to check Stella & Dot’s policies and procedures beforehand.

3.) Keep it Simple During the MSD
* Set up about 3 jewelry trays and 2 neck forms – you don’t need much more! Keep it easy for yourself & don’t overwhelm your potential stylist.
* Have a folder ready to hand out with the following: Look Book, opportunity brochure, Jump Start printout, Start Kit Contents printout, and your business card.
* Bring your calendar so you can schedule their launch show on the spot! Or if they aren’t ready to jump in right away, you can schedule a trunk show with them so they can get to know Stella & Dot even more.
